Cabinet has approved a Government plan to train over 2,000 students to conduct research and manufacture solar panels, said Media Minister Gayantha Karaunathilaka. He said this decision was to develop renewable power generation by improving and increasing solar power usage by 20%.

More Technological Faculties will come up in schools this year to popularise the subject, a senior Education Ministry official said. He said that, 30 such Faculties in the 9 Provinces will be constructed at a cost of Rs 1.3 billion, with each building costing Rs 30 million, while a Faculty will have equipment worth Rs 30 million.

The Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU) has demanded the Education Ministry revert to the issuing of school uniforms for the 2017 academic year, claiming the voucher system introduced this year had placed students in severe difficulties.

The CTU this week said it would oppose Government plans to promote and appoint 4,600 teachers and principals who do not qualify for the Sri Lanka Principal's Service. CTU General Secretary, Joseph Stalin said they will take legal action if the Cabinet papers recommending the names is approved. According to the list, around 2,500 teachers and principals have been named for the principals' post.

Psychiatric Clinics are to be established islandwide for schoolchildren with cognitive issues they cannot cope with, the Health Ministry said. Elderly Care, Youth & Disabled consultant Dr. Ananda Jayalal said that, under the Youth Health Policy finalised by the Ministry recently, Friendly Psychiatric Clinics (FPC) will be opened in all major hospitals in the provinces and districts, for schoolchildren with issues related to cognitive problems.
