2nd International Conference for Accounting Researcher’s and Educators (ICARE 2016) organized by the Department of Accountancy of University of Kelaniya was recently held at Sunil Shantha Memorial Auditorium of University of Kelaniya under the theme of “Accounting, Governance and Corporate Sustainability”. The ceremonial inauguration of the annual session was graced by the chief guest Prof. D.M. Semasinghe (Dean, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies), Dr. Sunanda Madduma Bandara (Senior Professor and Vice Chancellor of University of Kelaniya), Dr.M.J.S Wijeyratne (Senior Professor and Chairman of Research Council, University of Kelaniya), Dr.W.V.A.D. Karunarathne (Conference Chair and Head of the Dept. of Accountancy, Faculty of Commerce and management Studies, University of Kelaniya), Mr. R.M.S. Bandara (Conference Co-Chair, Dept. of Accountancy, Faculty of Commerce and management Studies, University of Kelaniya, Ms. U.A.H.A. Rathnasiri (Conference Secretary, Dept. of Accountancy, University of Kelaniya) and the representatives from local and international universities and from professional institutes. Ms. Sri Widowati (Country Director, Asian Development Bank) participated the event as the Guest of Honor.
The conference aimed to bring together academics and practitioners of accounting arena to broaden the horizons of accounting discipline. “ICARE 2016 will provide an opportunity for participants from academia and professional practice to share their knowledge and experience in the field of accounting. As research is a cooperative enterprise among scholars and practitioners, we are committed to provide a collaborative environment that fosters the free flow of ideas and constructive feedback among researchers, practitioners and students. Thus ICARE becomes a platform form disseminating contemporary knowledge in accounting discipline. Thus, ICARE 2016 is a great achievement of the Department of Accountancy which showcase the strength of all academics, professionals and undergraduates which contributes to the sustainable development of the country” said Dr.W.V.A.D. Karunarathne, Conference Chair and Head of Department of Accountancy, Faculty of Commerce and Managemenet studies, University of Kelaniya.
Keynote address was delivered by Mr. Jagath Perera, Partner, KPMG in Sri Lanka/Maldives, Head of Risk Consulting and Forensic Services. He emphasizes the need of well structured research culture in accounting discipline to raise the global mobility of the field. “I think ICARE 2016 will be an energetic contribution to our devotion for encouraging excellent research in accounting discipline. This attempt will surely enhance the trust and reputation of accountants among the business community. ICARE 2016 also focuses on issues of interest of high level professionals, executives and leading experts to present recent work on “future of forensic accounting in Sri Lanka” relating to sustainability. There is an imperative need of making a debate on the future of forensic accounting of Sri Lanka. In addition the conference may be an attractive platform for internationals to be a part of Sri Lankan academic culture” added Mr. Jagath Perera.
Ms. Sri Widowati (Country director, Asian Development Bank) in her speech mentioned that sustainable development was nothing new to Sri Lanka. It was deeply rooted in Sri Lankan society as a way of life and as an integral part of the economic pursuits. Sri Lanka looked forward with much expectation to the deliberations of ICARE 2016 and it would take forward the commitments towards global sustainable development.
Department of Accounting (DoA) of University of Kelaniya was established in the year 1998 and one of the leading departments in the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies. DoA has designed its degree programmes to meet the changing local and global demands and committed to pursue excellence in research, teaching and consultancy services. ICARE was first introduced in 2015 to provide an excellent opportunity to accounting researchers and educators to disseminate their new knowledge.
This year ICARE has become a cherished moment for the Department of Accounting as DoA launched its Online Journal of Accounting Researchers and Educators. The journal strives to bridge the gap of professional academic collaboration to uplift the accounting arena to the next generation. This year ICARE remarks opening new doors of the DoA event calender with the initiation of ICARE Magazine. This magazine consists of technical papers published by renowned professional bodies and audit firms. The technical paper discussion forum provides an unparalleled opportunity to share knowledge and experience from eminent panel of professionals and academics revolving around the theme of “Accounting, Governance and Corporate Sustainability”.
