Being a leading University in Sri Lanka which executes for excellence in higher education with national, regional and global standards, University of Peradeniya reaches its 75th year of excellence in 2017. As it reaches its 75th milestone, the university has planned a year of Diamond Jubilee celebrations throughout 2017.
The inaugural ceremony of the Diamond Jubilee was recently held at Gymnasium of University of Peradeniya in the form of a traditional university ceremony. The ceremonial procession was graced by Chancellor Prof. P.W. Epasinghe, Vice Chancellor Prof. Upul B. Dissanayake and other distinguished invitees. Former Vice Chancellor Prof. B.L. Panditharatne and former registrar M.B. Adikaram made speeches at the event, reminiscing about the history of the university. Renowned diplomat and Peradeniya Alumnus Dr. Jayantha Dhanapala delivered Diamond Jubilee Oration.
Co-chaired by Prof. K.Samarasinghe and S.Rajapakse, the Diamond Jubilee Committee is planning year-long activity series to celebrate this grand event. The committee will arrange a publication volume of Diamond Jubilee Essays which will be edited by Professor K.N.O. Dharmadasa. Inter-faculty and inter-university competitions in essay writing, poetry, short stories and drama will be held through 2017. A series of seminars that reflects on the university’s contribution to diverse fields of knowledge in the country will also be held during the year.
The Diamond Jubilee committee invites those Peradeniya alumni, living all over the world to contribute these activities of celebrations of their Alma mater. Essays on unknown or little-known aspects of the university are welcome in English, Sinhala and Tamil for the Diamond Jubilee Volume.
University of Peradeniya has owed for decades old University tradition which commenced with the inception of the University of Ceylon, the first institution of its kind established in Colombo on 1 July 1942. It moved to the banks of Mahaweli River, the longest in the Country, in 1952. During the history of its evolution as the oldest and the largest University in the country, it was occurred as University of Ceylon (1942-1952), University of Ceylon Peradeniya (1952-1972), Peradeniya Campus, University of Sri Lanka (1972-1978) and finally University of Peradeniya since 1978. University of Peradeniya strives to offer globally recognized knowledge and education to knowledge seekers at undergraduate, postgraduate and non-graduate levels and deliver education, training and research programs by conducting professional and curriculum-based teaching and learning and conduct high quality research for national, regional and global needs whilst maintaining highest levels of efficiency, effectiveness, integrity and transparency in contributing to the development of a knowledge-based society. The university highly valued its highest standard of teaching, learning & research, academic freedom, integrity and transparency in all its functions and respect for cultural diversity.
